ACADEMY DIVISION: GENERAL RULES

1. Academy classes are open to any breed of horse or pony (“horse”). Stallions are prohibited.

2. Horses must be regularly used for lessons in a public or private (family owned) program.
Horses MUST display the characteristic and manners of a horse capable of being used in a lesson environment. The quality of the horse is not to be a determining factor in the class.

3. In ALL Academy classes, only the rider is to be judged.
Academy Equitation class – the RIDER is judged as a beginning equitation rider.
Academy Horsemanship/Pleasure class – The RIDER is judged on the horsemanship and ringmanship; The ability of the rider to handle the mount and put it through its required gaits correctly.

4. SAFETY in the Academy division is paramount. The judge has the right to excuse a horse that is considered unsafe or is endangering other riders.

5. Show management has the right to ask all trainers, attendants and spectators to adhere to basic rules of safety with no whips, plastic bags and/or noise devices in the warm up ring and or show ring areas. This includes the use of whips or any other attention getting devices when riders are lined up.

6. Riders who have been judged in a regular performance class at any show may not return to the academy division.

7. Riders who have cantered in a class are not eligible for Walk/Trot Academy Classes.

 

ACADEMY AND SHOW PRACTICE: THE HORSE AND RIDER

1. Horses are prohibited from wearing any artificial devices/appointments while in the show ring; this includes tail switches, and/or tail braces, or action devices. Tongue ties may be used, lip cords are not allowed. Hooves may or may not be blacked.  Hunt seat horses are not to be braided.  Blinkers may be used.

2. Horses can be bridled with a snaffle, snaffle with martingale, snaffle with German Martingale, snaffle with draw reins, Full bridle, or bridle with a Pelham or Kimberwick style bits.  Horses are to be saddled appropriately to the division they are entered in.

3. Horses can wear protective boots and or leg wraps only if necessary for the safety of the horse. Weighted boots and or action devices will not be allowed.

4. Gloves, riding boots, and jodhpurs are appropriate attire for the academy or show practice rider.  Jackets, derbies and attire with farm logos and/or farm names are prohibited. Safety Helmets are the only acceptable headgear. In Western Academy the rider must NOT use western show apparel (western hat, chaps, or western show vest and jackets).  Black or blue jeans are acceptable in the western classes, but not in hunt or saddle seat.  In Hunt Academy riders are to wear breeches or jodhpurs with paddock boots.  Helmets are required for all academy classes with riders under the age of 18.

5. All Participants in any class in Academy must have a suitable saddle with feet in stirrups.

6. Horses may be cross entered in other classes at the same horse show; however performance horses not utilized regularly in a lesson program or in lessons are prohibited from showing in the Academy Division.

7. As a safety consideration, all handlers/headers in any Academy class for any horse or rider must be 18 years of age or older.
